We thought the presentation before the play started conducted by a Case grad student was more
very good. She gave a very good outline of the history of the Cleveland Playhouse and its connection to the Allen Theater. The background on the play itself added to our enjoyment of it. She also showed us how the set was designed with the stones actually being painted. The play was very funny and went by quickly. Overall a very good experience.

we found one more happily entertaining theatre evening, this time at The Playhouse . . . Ken Ludwig’s ‘The Game’s a Foot’ (or Holmes for the Holidays}. Billed as a murder mystery comedy, it was indeed that. In William Gillette’s elegant Tudor mansion around the 2nd last turn of century, the play delivered high energy, great humor from sly to slapstick and an intriguing murder mystery. The directing was near impeccable, the actors first-rate, and the show rollicked along with those of us in the audience bouncing between rapt attention and laugh-out loud fun. Staging and choreography would have done Broadway proud. Allen Posner (again) gets credit for his directorial imagination and skill. Gillete for those to young to know was one of the brightest stars on the American Stage 100+ years ago, celebrated for his Shakerspearn roles as well as Sherlock Holmes. Kudos to all.

The Game's Afoot play by Ken Ludwig is showing at Playhouse square in Cleveland, Ohio. more
It's the world premier of the play.
The comedy is about William Gillete, this first actor to play Holmes on the stage (for the speaking-screen clive brook has the honour) who is shot onstage after a performance of his play, Sherlock Holmes (yes, the one that the Basil Rathebone film was based off). He invites some fellow theater friends to his labyrinthine-mansion home, where a murder does take place. It is up to Gillete to become Sherlock Holmes and solve the case.
I'll admit, I never had a high opinion of Gillete. He invented 'elementary my dear watson' and brought the Huge pipe and deerstalker to the theatre. But to hear the representation of this actor in this play speak so highly of Holmes and his sense of Justice made me think better of him. That and the fact that i too would be rushing to solve a case if it happened right under my nose.
The acting was amazing and the jokes were perfectly timed (if not a little foreseeable). And there was enough Shakespeare to satisfy a true play fan (gillete even mentioned the correct sitation of 'the game is afoot- shakespeare's henry V). It runs slightly like an agatha christie mystery (expected, as the Mousetrap inspired ludwig) and is altogether worth seeing. So if you happen to be in Cleveland and need something to fuel your addiction, go see this play.
-

"The Game's Afoot" provided the most fun I've had in the theater in years. The more

Saturday night 11-27-201 Just saw The Game's Afoot and LOVED IT ! Job well-done, cast more
& crew ... MacKay as Gillette/Holmes commanded the stage...Kilgariff as Martha Gillette won over everyone's heart ...Rolfsrud as Daria Chase stole the show in a role that just will not die...McClure as Simon Bright had many of the biggest laughs well- delivered early on ... Hissom playing Felix Geisel/Moriarty was a perfect compliment with whomever he was sharing the scene ... Bruneau (Madge Geisel/ Marian) timed her too few lines wonderfully well ... Hawkinson's Aggie Wheeler fit fetchingly well with both the Gilette and Simon characters ... Day as the Inspector was a bit too Saturday Night Live "It's Pat" over- the- top, yet drew quite a few laughs... Ludwig's written dialogues were hilarious ... crowd stayed engaged but failed to appreciate with a standing O ... would see again ... hope word of mouth invites a loooong run here in Cleveland (no offense to those wanting to take it on the road) ... set design was incredible, so very realistic ... cast was wonderful ... congrats … HIT written all over it …
definitely recommend enjoying the show... great story with lots of laughs
